Spray-up Technique

Fiberglass
The chopper gun sprays resin and chops the glass fibers simultaneously

The Spray-up technique is an open mold method of processing in which glass fiber reinforcements in the form of spray-up roving (Fiberex 605 series) are chopped and deposited on the mold surface. Simultaneously, the chopped glass fibers, catalyzed resin, and in some cases filler material, are deposited on the mold from a combination chopper and spray gun. The molded product has a smooth surface finish on one side that is in contact with the mold surface. Rollers or squeegees are used to remove air and thoroughly work the resin into the reinforcement. Additional layers of chopped roving and resin may be added to build up the required component thickness. Woven roving ( Fiberex WR series) can be added to the laminate for specific strength orientation. Core materials can also be incorporated. The spray-up technique is ideal for components with large surface areas such as bath tubs, water slides, boat hulls, and dome lights.

Fiberex Products:
  • 408, 410 Series - The 408 series of single end roving is designed for processes that use epoxy or phenolic resin systems.
  • 503, 510 Series - The 503 series of single end roving is compatible with  different resin systems.
  • 605 Series - The 605 series of Spray-up roving is designed for spray-up applications.
  • TR Series - The TR Series of Texturized single end roving.
  • CR Series - The CR Series of Multi-end constructed roving is preferred when strength is desired.
  • WR Series - The WR Series of Woven roving is the Fiberex line of woven fabrics.
